Since the end of 2008, a polio epidemic has been spreading from Nigeria to neighbouring countries in West and Central Africa. In 2009, there were 42 polio cases in Guinea, which had been polio-free from 2004 through 2008.

The outbreak here raises the question of access to immunization. The political turmoil this country has faced over the last few years has significantly affected children's health.

"The health system has not had adequate funding," says Dr. Camille Soumah, coordinator of Guinea's vaccination programme. "As a result, the government was not able to organize advanced vaccination campaigns that would have protected every child, even those in remote areas."

Immunization outreach via radio

The new polio cases prompted the Guinean Ministry of Health – with support from UNICEF, the World Health Organization, Rotary International and other partners – to embark on a national immunization drive in which health agents are going door to door to reach all children under the age of five.

Yeninka, 5, held by her father, is now partially paralyzed by polio because she was not vaccinated against the disease when it returned to Guinea.

The drive is part of a larger effort in the region. A series of three-day campaigns, organized simultaneously in 19 countries, aim to vaccinate 85 million children and stop the polio epidemic by the end of 2010.

UNICEF Guinea is supporting outreach via local radio stations to spread the polio campaign message in rural areas. In Dabola, eastern Guinea, for example, community radio airs a health programme every day calling on families to stay home and wait for the health agents to vaccinate their children.

'Good-quality campaigns'

The broadcasts reach villages within a 100-km radius, and the message seems to be heard.

"This is the best way to convince reluctant families," notes Sekou Camara, the district health chief. "With the radio, we can spread the right message and raise awareness very easily."

Once all children under five in a household are immunized, the vaccination team uses chalk to mark the house with a large 'V' – indicating that every child has been reached.

"With good-quality campaigns that leave no child unvaccinated, [we] can succeed in making Guinea polio-free again," said UNICEF Representative in Guinea Julien Harneis.

Please Join the Unstoppable Frankie PIcasso on Unstoppable Planet to end the anguish of Afghan woman. Help stop the suicide and the abuse!!!

Stop the Abuse of Afghan Women
When Gulsoom was 15, she was forced to marry a 40-year-old man. Her husband was a drug addict who regularly beat her. Feeling trapped in her abusive marriage, Gulsoom attempted suicide by setting herself on fire.

More and more Afghan women are resorting to suicide to escape abuse within forced marriages. Last year, a law was passed in Afghanistan that legalized marital rape. Laws like this keep Afghanistan's hospitals overrun with women who attempt suicide by self-immolation. These women do not have the support of their governments to report their abusers and leave their abusive husbands–they see death as the only way out of their miserable circumstances.

Women should not be seen as second-class citizens. Until the government enforces protection for women and outlaws domestic violence, the women of Afghanistan will continue to seek refuge through suicide. Tell the President of Afghanistan that women need more laws to protect them from violence and abuse.

Dear President Karzai,

More and more Afghan women are resorting to suicide to escape abuse within forced marriages.

Last year, a law was passed in Afghanistan that legalized marital rape. Laws like this keep Afghanistan's hospitals overrun with women who attempt suicide by self-immolation. These women see death as the only way out of their miserable circumstances.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights", and that "marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses". I feel that current Afghan laws and practices violate these statements and must be amended.

Women should not be seen as second-class citizens. Afghan women need more laws to protect them from violence and abuse.

	Sincerely,

"Never Again!" is often said regarding the atrocities of the Holocaust during World War II and yet, the horrors of those times still live on TODAY. zzzz

In North Korea, 150,000 to 200,000 people are believed to be imprisoned in government-run concentration camps–called gulags–for criticizing the government or practicing Christianity. Not only are these "offenders" sent to the camps, but the next two generations of their family as well, in order to "root out the bad blood and seed of dissent."

The conditions of these labor camps are terrible: food rations are meager (many survive on rats), babies born in the detention facilities are stamped to death by guards, and unethical chemical experiments are conducted on the detainees. Most of the imprisoned die by age 50 (if not sooner) due to the awful working and living conditions.

China is the one country in the world with the closest ties to North Korea. Take action today and urge the Chinese government to wield their influence over North Korea to shut down these inhumane camps. Never again starts NOW! .

	deadline: Ongoing… goal: 20,000
1,896 signatures!

It is all too easy to ignore the reality that people are suffering, especially when the situation seems hopeless and compassion is just too painful. However, as the great Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said, "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest."
Let North Korea know that this inhumane behavior is unacceptable by signing this petition today! » Take action link: http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AFu8R/zkL4/ALX3g

Now I don’t think it’s an official holiday or anything, but this morning the Universe has gone out of it’s way, in very concrete ways I might add, to make sure that I heard the news.

Do you listen to the messages the Universe sends to you? Are you able to connect the Dots of ‘coincidence’ peppered through your day or do you miss the subtle signs entirely? It’s not a judgment that I am rendering, merely a question I am asking.

So many folks are caught up in their daily grind of activities that it often takes a forced silence to get them to ‘hear’ themselves think. I know how easily that can happen. Sometimes we forget that we are here for a reason, a higher purpose , a mission to uncover our own secret of who we are and why we are here..

Girls Day.. did you know that 75 million children should be attending Primary School today and are not. 55 % of them of girls. Yes, 41 million girls will never go to school or get formal education, but they will get an education in hardship, They will know what it’s like to do back breaking labor from sun up to sun down, they will know the pain of losing their children to harsh conditions and they will know what it’s like to see their friends die in childbirth because of infection and lack of medical attention. But they won’t know how to spell their own name. Seems a shame don’t you think that in today’s world, a girl can work 2 jobs and be married by 14 but she can’t spell her name or that of her child.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste! Yes indeed it surely is, but so is an opportunity to do something about it. Oh I know, you already do so much. I get it. I really do. Just yesterday I was thinking the same thing. All the emails, calls and in person solicitations I get EVERY DAY for money to help this or that organization is becoming overwhelming. Some folks make you feel bad or guilty, even when you KNOW that you already do so much.

Obviously you can’t say Yes to everyone, not only would you be in the same position as those you are trying to help, but it makes no sense to spread your resources so thin. No, I say pick your battles, Choose the ones that resonate with your spirit. There is never any shortage of issues that need our attention.

Today I read that President Obama reads 10 hand picked letters every day to see what is on the Peoples Minds. Amnesty International has compiled letters from 10 influential thinkers that boldy make a statement against torture.

If you want to visit their website to read these letters and send on the one you find most inspiring to President Obama you can do so at http://takeaction.amnestyusa.org/siteapps/advocacy/Error.aspx?c=jhKPIXPCIoE&b=5273371&e=6

The Letter I found to be most disturbing, moving, touching was written by Sister Diana Ortiz, who was tortured while on a mission to Guatemala in 1989.

Sister Dianna Ortiz is the founder of TASCC. Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition–or TASSC–the only organization in the United States made up of survivors of torture In 1989, she was abducted by security forces while working as a missionary among indigenous people in Guatemala. She was taken to a secret prison in the capital center and brutally tortured. She was burned with cigarettes, raped, beaten and forced to torture a woman who was already near death.

Dear President Obama,

On November 2, 1989, I was burned with cigarettes more than 111 times. I was raped over and over again–and this was only the beginning.

During the past few years, I have had ample reason to reflect on the life of an extraordinary man, Jean Amery, an Austrian philosopher who was tortured by the Nazis. I was first introduced to his writings shortly after my own torture in Guatemala. Like many who have survived this unspeakable horror, I emerged from that clandestine prison lost and broken–a body without a soul. Gone was the God to whom I had committed my life. Gone was trust, the very idea of justice betrayed. Gone was all that I had believed in. Everything that defined me as a human being ceased to exist.

Amery's words, odd as this may seem, brought some comfort: "Anyone who has been tortured remains tortured." "Anyone who has suffered torture never again will be at ease in the world…faith in humanity, already cracked by the first slap in the face, then demolished by torture, is never acquired again."

These words seemed written just for me. Somehow, somewhere on this earth was another person who understood what I had learned at the cruel hands of my torturers. For a moment at least, it gave me peace of mind. It was only years later that I would understand the fundamental meaning of Amery's words: "Anyone who has suffered torture, never again will be at ease in the world." And it was years after this understanding that I would learn that Jean Amery had killed himself.

Mr. President, from anonymous graves, voices still cry out. From clandestine prisons, in the midst of indescribable pain, we, my sisters and brothers, beg you to hear. Will you listen to what we alone know of this crime against humanity–what we know from the inside out?

Please hear us! Torture does not end with the release from some clandestine prison. It is not something we "get over." Simply, "looking forward" is not an option for us. Torture is a permanent invasion of our minds and our souls. Surviving is far worse than the actual physical torture itself. Those wounds heal in time–but the memories cling to us. Psychological torture is time without end. No one fully recovers from torture. The damage can never be undone.

What is our claim to speak with authority on this subject? We have been beaten, hanged by wrists, arms, or legs, burned by electrical devices or cigarettes, bitten by humans and dogs, cut or stabbed with knives or machetes. And this is only a sample of what has been done to us. Each mark, visible or invisible, is a permanent reminder of what was done to us–a reminder that in so many cases fills us with embarrassment and even shame. What a cruel irony that it is the tortured one and not the torturer who feels shame.

And what an irony it is that today in the United States, the tortured so often are told that what they experienced was not even cruel and unusual, let alone torture. What an irony that those who oppose torture, oppose the violation of U.S law by acts of non-violent civil resistance can be sent to prison while those who ordered this brutality walk free, receiving the de facto impunity implied in your call to "look forward" and only forward.

Mr. President, there is ample reason to believe that important members of the previous administration may well have violated the law. Is it not your responsibility and that of the Attorney General to investigate that possibility? And if the law was violated, is it not your responsibility to hold perpetrators accountable, no matter how exalted their previous positions?

We who have paid the dreadful price of torture beseech you to determine just what happened to law and morality during the past eight years and to make those findings public. It is only by an independent investigation that we will learn the truth, and, if that investigation warrants, it will be by prosecution that we may hold to account those who violated the law and despoiled our national honor. Getting things right in the future depends on knowing what went wrong in the past. You know this when it comes to the economy. You know this when it comes to a health care system. How can you not know it when it comes to human rights?

Mr. President, on behalf of those who know this cruel subject so well, I ask you to act in service to the truth and to the principle that no matter how high the position held nor how much power accrues to it, its incumbent must be held accountable to the law. As I hope you will agree, sir, to do less is to betray the very idea of justice.

Thank you for reading my letter.

Sister Dianna Ortiz, U.S. citizen tortured in Guatemala
